UAE Labour Card for Employees: Requirements, Application & Renewal Process

If you work in the UAE private sector, you will probably hear HR teams use terms such as labour card, work permit, employment visa and labour contract. They are connected, but they do not all mean the same thing.

The term labour card UAE is still commonly used for an employee's work authorisation record. Under the current system, however, the important legal document is the work permit issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) for establishments that fall under its jurisdiction. The UAE Government states that a person cannot work legally without the required work permit.

Most of the process is handled by your employer. As an employee, your main job is to provide accurate documents, check that your employment details are correct and keep track of the permit's validity.

This guide explains the requirements, application process, renewal rules, costs and how to check labour card status online UAE through official channels.

What Is a UAE Labour Card?

A UAE labour card is the commonly used name for the employment record linked to a worker's MoHRE work permit.

In simple terms, the work permit is the government's authorisation allowing you to work for an approved employer under the stated employment arrangement. It is different from your residence visa and Emirates ID.

The UAE Labour Law requires a work permit before a worker can legally undertake employment. MoHRE currently provides several work-permit categories to suit different employment arrangements. The UAE Government's official work-permit guidance lists 13 types of permits, including permits for recruitment from outside the UAE, transfers, part-time work, temporary work, family-sponsored residents, students, juveniles, freelancers and Golden Residence holders.

You can read the official UAE Government work permit guidance for the current categories.

Your employment contract is also a separate document. It records agreed terms such as your job, salary and employment conditions. If you want to understand how contracts fit into the process, see Nexture's guide to employment contract types in the UAE.

Who Needs a Labour Card in the UAE?

Employees working for private-sector establishments registered with MoHRE generally need the appropriate MoHRE work permit before starting work. The exact permit depends on your situation and the type of employment.

For example, a company recruiting someone directly from India may use the overseas recruitment work permit. Someone moving between UAE employers may instead require a transfer permit. A person already sponsored by a spouse or parent can have a different permit route.

The rule also applies to people whose UAE residence is not sponsored by their employer. Holding a family-sponsored residence visa or Golden Visa does not automatically remove the requirement for proper work authorisation when the job falls under MoHRE rules. MoHRE has specific permit categories for these arrangements.

Free-zone employment needs extra care. Some free zones operate through their own employment and immigration systems, so you should check the rules of the authority under which your employer is registered rather than assuming every UAE employee follows exactly the same MoHRE process.

What Does "Company Labour Card UAE" Mean?

You may also see people searching for a company labour card UAE.

This phrase can cause confusion. An employee's labour card or work permit relates to that person's employment authorisation. A company's establishment card or labour file relates to the business and its ability to carry out employment and immigration transactions.

If you are an employer, see Nexture's guide to the UAE establishment card before starting employee visa and permit applications.

UAE Labour Card Requirements

There is no single document checklist that applies to every work-permit category. Requirements change according to the permit, occupation, employee's current residence status and employer.

For a standard worker recruited from outside the UAE, MoHRE's current service information requires the employer and employee to meet specific conditions. The employee must generally be at least 18 years old and the establishment must have the required electronic quota available.

Common employee documents include:

  • Clear passport copy

  • Recent colour photograph meeting the required specifications

  • Employment and job-offer information

  • Academic qualification where required for the skill level

  • Professional licence or approval where the occupation is regulated

  • Other documents requested for the specific work-permit category

Academic documents are particularly important for certain skilled occupations. MoHRE's current work-permit guidance states that skill levels 1 and 2 generally require a bachelor's degree or higher, levels 3 and 4 require a diploma or higher and level 5 requires a high-school certificate.

Some jobs need professional approval as well. A doctor, nurse or another regulated professional, for example, may need the relevant professional licence from the competent authority before the employment application can move forward.

The employer must also meet MoHRE requirements. Its licence and establishment records need to support the intended recruitment and the proposed occupation should be appropriate for the company's activity.

You can review the current document requirements directly through MoHRE's new overseas work permit service.

How to Apply for a UAE Labour Card

Employees usually do not submit a standard employer-sponsored work permit application themselves. The employer handles the process through MoHRE or an approved service channel.

The basic sequence is fairly straightforward.

  1. Employer Confirms Eligibility

The company first checks its establishment status, available quota, proposed profession and the correct work-permit category.

  2. Employee Documents Are Collected

You provide your passport, photograph, qualifications and any profession-specific approvals requested for your job.

Make sure your name, passport details and job title are consistent across the documents. Small discrepancies can create unnecessary delays.

  3. Employer Submits the Work Permit Application

The employer submits the application electronically through the relevant government channel. MoHRE reviews the application and checks that the permit conditions and supporting documents are satisfied.

The UAE's Work Bundle also combines employment-related services and currently covers all seven emirates. It includes new employee hiring, pre-renewal of work permits and cancellation of employee permits and residence. Applications are accessed through UAE Pass and the relevant government platforms.

You can view the government's Work Bundle platform for more information.

  4. Fees Are Paid and the Permit Is Issued

Once the required approvals are received, the employer completes the applicable payment and permit formalities.

For workers arriving from overseas, residence-related procedures can then involve immigration formalities, medical fitness requirements and Emirates ID processing depending on the employee's circumstances. For more detail on the MoHRE side of the process, see Nexture's MoHRE Services UAE guide.

How to Check Labour Card Online UAE

You do not always need to ask HR every time you want an update.

MoHRE provides an official Transactions Inquiry Service for tracking applications submitted to the Ministry. Its inquiry system also includes electronic work-permit information and related permit services.

To check the labour card online in the UAE, you can:

  1. Visit the official MoHRE website or inquiry service.

  2. Select the relevant application, transaction or electronic work-permit enquiry.

  3. Enter the information requested by the system.

  4. Review the permit or application status displayed.

Use the official MoHRE Transactions Inquiry Service rather than giving passport or Emirates ID details to an unknown third-party website.

This is also the safest route if you want to check labour card UAE, verify a pending application or check the labour card status online.

UAE Labour Card Renewal Process

A work permit should remain valid for as long as you continue working under the employment arrangement covered by that permit.

MoHRE's current employment-contract renewal service states that work permits may be renewed up to 60 days before their expiry date.

The employer normally handles the renewal.

A typical renewal involves:

  1. Checking the existing permit's expiry date.

  2. Confirming that the employee and employer still meet the applicable conditions.

  3. Preparing the renewed employment contract and required supporting documents.

  4. Submitting the renewal through MoHRE.

  5. Paying the applicable government fees.

  6. Receiving the renewed employment approval.

MoHRE lists an employment contract approved by the Ministry and signed by both employer and employee among the documents used for its issuance and renewal service.

The exact documents can still vary. A change in job title, regulated occupation, expired passport or other change in the employee's circumstances may mean extra documentation is required.

You can check MoHRE's current employment contract issuance and renewal service before submitting a renewal.

Employers should also keep their wider labour compliance in order. Salary-payment problems, expired company documentation or unresolved employment records can create complications across HR processes. Nexture's guide to WPS penalties in the UAE explains the salary-payment side in more detail.

UAE Labour Card Cost

There is no single fixed UAE labour card price that applies to every employee.

Work-permit fees depend on factors including the permit being requested and the employer's MoHRE classification. Other immigration, insurance, medical or service charges may also apply separately depending on the employee's case.

For example, MoHRE's current overseas work-permit service lists:

  • AED 50 work-permit application fee for Categories 1, 2 and 3

  • AED 250 for issuance of a two-year permit for a Category 1 establishment

  • AED 1,200 for Category 2

  • AED 3,450 for Category 3

These figures relate to that specific MoHRE service and should not be treated as a universal price for every UAE employee or permit type. MoHRE also notes that approved business-centre commissions and other charges can apply.

The UAE Labour Law also prohibits an employer from charging a worker the fees and costs of recruitment and employment, whether directly or indirectly.

Before budgeting for a new employee, employers should therefore identify the correct permit type first and check the latest MoHRE fee shown for that service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a labour card in the UAE?

A labour card is the common term used for an employee's official employment record linked to the UAE work-permit system. For employees working under MoHRE-regulated establishments, the work permit is the legal authorisation that allows the person to work for the approved employer.

How can I apply for a UAE labour card?

For a standard private-sector employment arrangement, your employer normally applies for the relevant work permit through MoHRE. You provide the required passport, photograph, employment and qualification documents and the employer completes the government application and payment process.

What documents are required?

Common requirements include a passport copy, recent photograph, employment details and academic qualifications where the job or skill level requires them. Regulated professions may also require approval or a professional licence from the competent authority. Requirements vary according to the permit category.

How long is a UAE labour card valid?

Validity depends on the permit type. Standard overseas and transfer work permits are commonly issued for two years, while some other permits have shorter periods. For example, MoHRE's mission work permit is issued for three months and can be renewed once for a similar period. Always check the expiry date shown on your actual work permit rather than assuming every labour card has the same validity.

How do I renew my UAE labour card?

Your employer normally submits the renewal through MoHRE. Work permits may currently be renewed up to 60 days before expiry. The employer checks your documents, prepares the required employment contract, submits the application, pays the applicable fees and completes the renewal after approval.
