Keeping AED 25,000 or AED 50,000 sitting in a current account can be difficult when you have just started a business. That money could be paying suppliers, salaries, software costs or other operating expenses.
This is where a zero-balance business bank account in the UAE can help. You can operate the account without maintaining a fixed monthly average balance. There is one important catch. Zero balance does not usually mean zero cost.
Many UAE banks remove the minimum balance requirement but charge a fixed monthly fee instead. International transfers, cash deposits, foreign exchange, cheque books and other services may also carry separate charges.
As of 2026, several UAE banks offer genuine business accounts with no minimum monthly balance. The best choice depends on your licence, company age, residency status, ownership structure and how you expect money to move through the account.
What Does Zero Balance Business Account Mean in the UAE?
A zero balance account generally means there is no minimum monthly average balance that your business must maintain. For example, if another business account requires an average balance of AED 50,000, falling below that figure could trigger a monthly charge. A zero-balance account removes that requirement.
It does not mean you should literally keep AED 0 in the account. You still need enough funds to pay subscription fees and process transactions.
Emirates NBD makes this distinction clear. Its Connect package has no minimum monthly average balance, but customers still need sufficient money in the account for applicable fees and charges.

Mbank Basic Business Banking
Mbank says its Basic Business Banking account has no minimum balance and no monthly account fee.
Companies registered anywhere in the UAE with a valid trade licence, including free-zone businesses, can apply. The account is currently AED-denominated. Mbank also asks for normal corporate documents such as the trade licence, MOA, certificate of incorporation, shareholder identification, proof of address and bank statements.
For a small company focused mainly on AED transactions, the published cost is difficult to beat.
ruya Business Current Account
ruya charges AED 79 per month and does not require a minimum balance.
It offers Shari'ah-compliant business banking and a digital application process. The bank also states that its business banking service is WPS-ready, which can matter once you begin paying employees through the UAE Wage Protection System.
Wio Business Essential
Wio's Essential plan costs AED 99 per month with nil minimum average monthly balance.
The plan includes multicurrency accounts, two users and 10 free local transfers each month. Wio positions the Essential plan mainly for freelancers and smaller businesses.
It may suit digital businesses that prefer to manage most banking through an app rather than regularly visiting a branch.
Mashreq NEO BIZ Pro
Mashreq NEO BIZ Pro currently has no minimum monthly balance and costs AED 99 plus VAT per month.
Its July 2026 Key Facts Statement sets several eligibility conditions. Owners, partners and signatories must be over 18, the company must be 100% owned by individuals and layered corporate ownership structures are not accepted under this product. Annual turnover can be up to AED 100 million.
At least one partner or power-of-attorney holder on the account must also be a UAE resident.
RAKBANK RAKstarter
RAKstarter is one of the better-known traditional bank options specifically marketed as a zero-balance business account.
There is no minimum monthly balance and the published maintenance charge is AED 103.95 including VAT. Accounts are available in AED, USD, EUR and GBP.
One condition deserves attention. RAKBANK's current online application page says companies older than 12 months are not eligible for RAKstarter.
That makes it particularly relevant when you have recently incorporated.
Which Zero Balance Account Should You Choose?
There is no single bank that works best for every UAE company.
If your main priority is keeping fixed costs low, Mbank deserves consideration. ruya is another lower-cost option if you prefer Shari'ah-compliant banking.
Wio can make more sense when your company works digitally and deals with several currencies. Mashreq NEO BIZ gives you another digital route through a large established UAE bank, provided you satisfy its ownership and residency conditions.
RAKstarter can work well for a recently incorporated company that wants multicurrency banking through a traditional bank.
ADCB SmartStart needs closer attention if you have overseas clients or suppliers. The account is AED-only and ADCB states that foreign-currency inward and outward payments are not permitted.
Compare your actual annual cost as well. AED 99 per month comes to AED 1,188 a year before any applicable VAT or transaction fees. AED 249 each month becomes AED 2,988 annually.
A slightly higher subscription could still be cheaper if it includes the transfers and services your company regularly uses.
Requirements to Open a Zero Balance Business Bank Account
Removing the balance requirement does not remove banking compliance.
UAE banks must identify and verify their customers. Under current Central Bank of the UAE customer due diligence rules, financial institutions must verify customers using reliable and independent information.
Banks also need to identify the natural people who ultimately own or control a company. Current rules generally use a 25% ownership or controlling-interest threshold when identifying beneficial owners.
The UAE's beneficial ownership framework also requires companies to maintain accurate information about the people who ultimately own or control them.
For a typical application, you should be ready to provide your valid UAE trade licence, certificate of incorporation, MOA and AOA where applicable, commercial registration, shareholder passports, Emirates IDs and residence visas where applicable.
Banks may also request a board resolution, power of attorney, proof of business address, company or personal bank statements and information showing where the company's money comes from.
A new company may be asked for invoices, customer contracts, supplier agreements, a website or details of expected turnover. These documents help the bank understand what your company actually does and whether the expected transactions make sense.
Can a Free Zone Company Get a Zero Balance Business Account?
Yes. Being incorporated in a UAE free zone does not automatically prevent you from opening one. Mbank, for example, expressly states that companies registered in UAE free zones can open a business account.
Other banks make their own assessment based on the free zone, licence activity, shareholders, office arrangement and expected payments.
We’ll model the requirements and send back a single-page breakdown within 24 hours.
Look Beyond the Minimum Balance
Monthly balance is only one cost.
Check local transfer fees, SWIFT charges, FX conversion, cash deposits, cheque-book fees, additional users and branch transactions before choosing.
Suppose your company receives USD payments from overseas clients every week. In that case, exchange rates and international transfer charges may cost you considerably more each year than the monthly subscription.
A cash-heavy retail business has different needs. Cash-deposit facilities and branch access may matter more than having the cheapest digital plan.
Conclusion
A zero balance business bank account in the UAE can be a sensible option for startups, freelancers and SMEs that would rather keep working capital available instead of maintaining a large bank balance.
The market now includes several genuine options. Mbank, ruya, Wio, Mashreq NEO BIZ, RAKBANK, ADIB, ADCB, Emirates NBD and Sharjah Islamic Bank all publish business-account packages without a minimum balance, subject to their individual eligibility rules.
Do not choose solely on the words “zero balance.” Compare monthly fees, transfer costs, currencies, residency conditions, branch access and KYC requirements.
