Dubai has built a detailed regulatory framework for crypto exchanges, brokers, custodians, token issuers and other Web3 businesses. Tax is another part of that framework.
A common assumption is that a Dubai crypto company pays no tax because the UAE does not impose personal income tax. That does not describe the position for a company.
A Web3 business can be subject to UAE Corporate Tax. It may also have VAT obligations depending on whether it trades virtual assets, charges transaction fees, provides custody, runs mining operations or supplies other services.
The rules have also changed in recent years. UAE VAT regulations now specifically address virtual assets and the Federal Tax Authority has issued separate guidance on cryptocurrency mining.
This guide explains crypto tax in Dubai from a business perspective and what founders should check before assuming that a crypto activity is tax-free.
Is Cryptocurrency Taxed in Dubai?
There is no separate tax called a "cryptocurrency tax" in Dubai. Instead, existing UAE tax rules apply to crypto and Web3 businesses. The two main taxes you need to consider are:
Tax | Main Rule for a Dubai Web3 Company |
Corporate Tax | Generally applies to taxable business profits |
VAT | Depends on the type of virtual asset transaction or service |
Personal income tax | The UAE does not currently impose a general federal personal income tax |
Withholding tax | Current UAE Corporate Tax withholding rate is 0% |
A UAE company is generally within the scope of Corporate Tax even when its revenue comes entirely from cryptocurrency or blockchain activities. The Ministry of Finance confirms that UAE juridical persons, including companies established in free zones, fall within the Corporate Tax framework.

Corporate Tax for Crypto Companies in Dubai
For most UAE companies, the standard Corporate Tax rates are:
0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000
9% on taxable income exceeding AED 375,000
Qualifying Free Zone Persons have a separate regime, with 0% applying to Qualifying Income and 9% applying to taxable income that does not qualify.
You can check the current federal framework directly through the UAE Ministry of Finance Corporate Tax portal.
Suppose a mainland Web3 company reports AED 1 million of taxable income after allowable adjustments.
Its basic calculation would be:
AED 375,000 × 0% = AED 0
AED 625,000 × 9% = AED 56,250
Estimated Corporate Tax: AED 56,250
The actual calculation can differ because accounting adjustments, deductible expenses, tax losses, related-party transactions and other provisions may affect taxable income.
Are Crypto Trading Profits Subject to Corporate Tax?
They can be. UAE Corporate Tax starts from a company's accounting net profit or loss, followed by adjustments required under tax law. That makes accounting treatment especially important for companies holding Bitcoin, Ether, stablecoins or other digital assets.
Consider two businesses.
A crypto market-making company may buy and sell tokens continuously as part of its normal operations. Its digital assets could form part of its trading activity.
A Web3 software company, however, might hold Bitcoin as a long-term treasury investment. The accounting and tax treatment can differ.
Your company therefore needs a clear record of:
acquisition price
disposal price
transaction fees
wallet movements
token swaps
realised gains and losses
accounting value at the reporting date
business versus non-business transactions
The label "crypto" does not determine the Corporate Tax result on its own.
What About Unrealised Crypto Gains?
This is one of the more technical parts of crypto tax in Dubai.Imagine your company buys Bitcoin for AED 500,000. At year-end, the holding is worth AED 650,000 but the company has not sold it. Whether that AED 150,000 accounting increase affects taxable income can depend on your accounting treatment and any election made under the Corporate Tax rules.
The FTA states that businesses using accrual accounting may elect to recognise certain gains and losses on a realisation basis. Depending on the election, unrealised gains on qualifying assets may not become taxable until the relevant asset is realised.
Crypto businesses should therefore decide how digital assets are classified in their accounts before preparing the tax return rather than attempting to fix the classification at year-end.
Does a Dubai Free Zone Crypto Company Pay 0% Tax?
Possibly, but incorporating in a free zone does not automatically mean 0% Corporate Tax. A company has to meet the conditions for a Qualifying Free Zone Person and its income has to fall within the rules for Qualifying Income.
The FTA confirms that Free Zone Persons remain within the Corporate Tax system. Qualifying Free Zone Persons can receive a 0% rate on Qualifying Income, while other taxable income can be taxed at 9%.
The non-qualifying revenue de minimis test is also important. Broadly, non-qualifying revenue must remain within the lower of 5% of total revenue or AED 5 million for the relevant rule to be satisfied.
There is an additional development relevant to virtual asset firms. In 2026, the Ministry of Finance confirmed that VARA was added to the relevant definition of competent authority for certain Free Zone qualifying activities involving fund management and wealth and investment management services. That does not mean every VARA-licensed crypto activity automatically receives 0% tax treatment. The specific activity, revenue source, counterparties and QFZP conditions still have to be tested.
VAT on Cryptocurrency in Dubai
This area changed significantly after Cabinet Decision No. 100 of 2024. For VAT purposes, the FTA treats cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum as virtual assets when they meet the relevant definition. Digital representations of fiat currency and financial securities are excluded from that definition
Transfer and Conversion of Virtual Assets
The transfer of ownership of virtual assets and conversion of virtual assets are exempt from VAT. The FTA says this exemption applies retrospectively from 1 January 2018. Buying and selling cryptocurrency through an exchange is one example given in its clarification.
That means the value of the Bitcoin, Ether or other qualifying virtual asset being transferred should not simply be treated as a standard 5% VAT sale.
But there is an important distinction between the virtual asset transaction and the service provided around that transaction.
Are Crypto Exchange Fees Subject to VAT?
A Web3 company should separate the asset itself from fees charged for its services. For example, assume a customer buys AED 50,000 worth of Bitcoin through a platform.
The Bitcoin transfer may fall within the virtual asset VAT exemption. However, the platform could separately charge:
transaction fees
brokerage fees
custody fees
wallet management fees
subscription charges
advisory fees
Those charges need their own VAT analysis. The FTA specifically states that keeping and managing virtual assets, including managing crypto wallets, is taxable when supplied in the UAE for an explicit fee, commission or similar charge.
Where the standard UAE VAT rate applies, that rate is 5%. Cross-border services may require a different analysis, including whether zero-rating conditions are met. This is why an exchange should not apply one VAT treatment to its entire transaction flow.
VAT on Crypto Custody and Wallet Services
Custodians need to pay particular attention to their revenue model. If your company holds or manages digital assets and charges a clear custody or management fee, that service can be taxable for VAT purposes.
For example:
Customer assets held: AED 2 million
Monthly custody fee: AED 5,000
Applicable VAT at 5%: AED 250
Invoice total: AED 5,250
The virtual assets being held and the custody service provided to the customer are two different things for VAT analysis.
Businesses planning regulated custody operations should also review Nexture's Dubai Virtual Asset Regulation Law guide.
How Is Crypto Mining Taxed for VAT?
The FTA issued specific guidance for proof-of-work cryptocurrency mining in VAT Public Clarification VATP039. There are two main cases.
Mining for your own account: The FTA treats this as outside the scope of VAT because there is no sufficiently identifiable recipient receiving the mining service in return for payment.
Mining for another person: Providing computational power to someone else for consideration is treated as a taxable supply of services.
The VAT rate can be 5% or potentially 0% depending on the circumstances and whether the requirements for an exported service are met.
The distinction also affects input VAT. A company performing taxable mining services may be able to recover related input VAT subject to the normal rules. Self-mining does not receive the same treatment.
We’ll model the requirements and send back a single-page breakdown within 24 hours.
Does a Crypto Company Need VAT Registration?
A UAE-resident business generally has to register for VAT when its taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 over the previous 12 months or are expected to exceed that amount within the next 30 days. Voluntary registration can generally become available from AED 187,500 in taxable supplies, imports or qualifying taxable expenses.
The key word here is taxable. If a company mainly earns exempt income from transferring or converting virtual assets, you cannot simply use its entire crypto transaction volume to decide whether the VAT threshold has been crossed. Taxable fees and other taxable supplies need to be identified separately.
Tax Records Web3 Companies Should Maintain
Crypto accounting becomes difficult when wallet records and company accounts are kept separately. A practical system should record each transaction with:
date and time
wallet address
transaction hash
asset and quantity
AED value at the relevant accounting point
exchange used
counterparty where identifiable
transaction or gas fee
reason for the transaction
accounting classification
supporting invoice or agreement
Keep separate records for company wallets, customer assets and founders' personal wallets.
Corporate Tax records generally need to be retained for at least seven years after the relevant tax period.
Your Corporate Tax return and payment are generally due within nine months after the end of the tax period. For example, the FTA confirmed that businesses with a financial year ending on 31 December 2025 had a filing and payment deadline of 30 September 2026.
Crypto Tax Dubai: A Simple Compliance Checklist
Before your Web3 company starts trading or serving customers, confirm these points:
Identify every revenue stream separately.
Determine whether each activity is regulated by VARA or another relevant authority.
Confirm whether the company is mainland or free zone.
Test whether free zone income actually qualifies for the 0% regime.
Determine the accounting treatment of cryptocurrency holdings.
Separate realised and unrealised gains correctly.
Classify virtual asset transfers separately from platform, custody and advisory fees.
Monitor the AED 375,000 VAT registration threshold for taxable supplies.
Reconcile wallets, exchanges and bank accounts regularly.
Keep transaction and tax records for the required period.
Doing this monthly is much easier than reconstructing several thousand blockchain transactions shortly before the filing deadline.
Conclusion
The main point about crypto tax in Dubai is that there is no single tax rule covering every digital asset business. A crypto company's profits can fall within UAE Corporate Tax. Standard businesses generally pay 0% on the first AED 375,000 of taxable income and 9% above that threshold, while eligible Free Zone businesses have their own Qualifying Income rules.
VAT works differently. Transfers and conversions of qualifying virtual assets are exempt, but fees charged for services such as custody or wallet management can still be taxable. Crypto mining also has its own VAT treatment depending on whether the company mines for itself or provides mining services to another party.
For a Web3 founder, the safest approach is to map the business model before deciding the tax treatment. Exchange revenue, proprietary trading, custody, token issuance, advisory services and mining can produce very different results even when every part of the business involves cryptocurrency.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is crypto tax-free in Dubai?
There is no separate Dubai cryptocurrency tax, but that does not make a crypto business automatically tax-free. UAE Corporate Tax can apply to company profits and VAT can apply to certain crypto-related services.
What is the Corporate Tax rate for a crypto company in Dubai?
For a standard taxable company, the rate is generally 0% on taxable income up to AED 375,000 and 9% on taxable income above AED 375,000. Different rules apply to Qualifying Free Zone Persons.
Is VAT charged when buying Bitcoin in Dubai?
The transfer of ownership and conversion of qualifying virtual assets, including cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, are exempt from VAT under the current rules. Separate service or management fees may have a different VAT treatment.
Do Dubai crypto exchanges pay Corporate Tax?
A UAE-incorporated crypto exchange is generally within the UAE Corporate Tax regime. Its taxable liability depends on its taxable income, legal structure, free zone status and applicable deductions or adjustments.
Is crypto mining subject to VAT in the UAE?
Mining cryptocurrency for your own account is outside the scope of VAT under the FTA's proof-of-work mining clarification. Providing mining services to another person is treated as a taxable supply of services.
Can a free zone crypto company pay 0% Corporate Tax?
It may qualify for 0% on Qualifying Income if it meets all applicable Qualifying Free Zone Person conditions. A free zone licence by itself does not guarantee the 0% rate.
