A family visa application in the UAE allows an eligible UAE resident to sponsor qualifying family members for residence. Business owners, company partners and investors can generally use this route once their own UAE residence permit is active and they meet the applicable sponsorship conditions.
The important point is timing. Having a trade licence by itself does not normally make you a family sponsor. You first need to complete your own residence process. After that, you can open or use your sponsorship file and start applying for your dependants.

Can Business Owners Sponsor Family Members in the UAE?
Yes. A business owner with a valid UAE residence permit can generally sponsor eligible family members, provided the relevant financial, accommodation and relationship conditions are met.
This can include a person holding an investor or partner residence connected to a mainland or free-zone company. Eligible investors and business partners may also hold a five-year Green Residence, which comes with family sponsorship benefits.

UAE Family Visa Sponsorship Requirements
Business ownership is only one part of the application. Immigration authorities also look at your residence status, financial position, accommodation and relationship with the person being sponsored.
- Valid UAE Residence
Your own residence must be valid before you can normally sponsor a dependant.
ICP states that the head of the family must hold a valid UAE residence permit. A dependant's residence is also linked to the sponsor's residence and cannot normally remain valid beyond it.
This means you should complete your investor or partner residence after company formation, before starting the family application.

- Financial Capacity
For standard family sponsorship, federal guidance currently sets the general minimum at:
AED 4,000 per month, or
AED 3,000 per month plus accommodation
Authorities may require financial evidence appropriate to the sponsor's status. For a business owner or investor, this can include a trade licence, partnership or investment agreement and other financial records rather than a conventional employee salary certificate.
Some family categories, especially parent sponsorship or exceptional cases, can have additional financial conditions.
- Suitable Accommodation
You must have appropriate accommodation for the family members you plan to sponsor.
In Dubai, this commonly means an Ejari-registered tenancy contract or proof that you own suitable residential property. ICP also requires adequate housing based on the number of family members being sponsored.
- Proof of Relationship
The relationship must be legally documented.

Birth certificate for a child
Birth or other recognised relationship evidence when sponsoring parents

Who Can You Sponsor?
The exact eligibility depends on your relationship and residence category.
Spouse
A resident can generally sponsor an eligible husband or wife.
You will normally need an attested marriage certificate that proves the legal relationship. If the document is not in Arabic, a certified Arabic translation may be requested.

How to Apply for a UAE Family Visa
The application usually moves through several stages.
- Complete Your Own Residence
Your business may be established, but your family application normally starts only after your own investor, partner or eligible residence becomes active.
Make sure your passport, Emirates ID, residence record and company documents are current.
- Prepare and Attest Relationship Documents
Arrange the marriage certificate for your spouse and birth certificates for your children.
If documents were issued overseas, complete the required authentication before filing. Translation may also be necessary.
Doing this early can save time. Waiting until your family member has already entered the UAE can make the 60-day residence-completion window harder to manage.
- Apply for the Family Entry Permit
If your family member is outside the UAE, you normally start with an entry permit.
GDRFA Dubai states that its family residence entry permit gives the person 60 days from entry to complete the residence procedures.
For Dubai, you can apply through GDRFA digital services or an Amer centre. In the other applicable emirates, use ICP smart channels.
- Complete an In-Country Status Change if Required
If your spouse or child is already in the UAE on another valid entry status, an in-country status adjustment may be possible.
This usually adds another government charge, so the family visa cost in Dubai can be higher when the dependant is already inside the country.
- Complete the Medical Fitness Test
Family members aged 18 or above must generally complete the UAE medical fitness examination for residence.
Emirates Health Services currently lists its standard Category A residency medical examination at AED 260 plus service-centre fees. Rates and packages can differ by emirate and processing speed.
- Apply for Emirates ID
The dependent must complete the Emirates ID process.
ICP currently charges for resident Emirates ID issuance at AED 100 for each year of residence, plus a AED 100 smart service fee.
Biometrics may be required depending on the applicant's age and previous UAE records.
- Complete Residence Issuance
Once the medical, ID and other conditions are cleared, immigration can issue the family residence permit.
Dubai's official family residence service gives an expected service completion period of around 48 hours once a complete application reaches that stage. The full process can take longer because entry permits, attestation, medical testing, insurance and Emirates ID involve separate steps.

Because of these variables, the UAE family visa cost for an adult will usually be higher than for a young child. Adults generally need a medical examination while children below the medical-testing age do not.

Renewing the Family Visa
Renewal depends heavily on the sponsor.
Before renewing a dependant, check that:
Your own residence is valid
Your company licence is active
Your accommodation documents remain valid
The dependent's passport has sufficient validity
Health insurance is active where required
Medical fitness is completed again when applicable
Relationship and supporting records remain acceptable
A dependent's residence generally cannot extend beyond the sponsor's residence validity. Business owners should therefore keep company licence, establishment and personal residence renewals organised before the family's expiry dates.

Unattested Relationship Documents
A normal scan of a foreign marriage or birth certificate may not be enough. Complete the applicable attestation before applying.
