Salary Certificate UAE: Format, Uses and How Employees Can Get One

Applying for a personal loan in Dubai? Renting an apartment? Sponsoring a family member? There is a good chance someone will ask you for proof of employment and income. That is where a salary certificate comes in.

A salary certificate is a formal document issued by your employer confirming where you work, your position and how much you earn. It sounds straightforward, but the format matters. A bank may want the letter addressed directly to it. A landlord may simply need proof that you have a stable income. An immigration authority may ask for a different employment document altogether.

This guide explains the salary certificate UAE format, what to include and how to get one without unnecessary back-and-forth with HR.

What Is a Salary Certificate in the UAE?

A salary certificate is a letter issued by an employer confirming an employee's employment and remuneration. It will normally state that you currently work for the company and provide details such as:

  • Full name

  • Job title

  • Date of joining

  • Basic monthly salary

  • Fixed allowances

  • Total monthly salary

  • Company information

  • Date of issue

  • Authorised signature

The document is normally printed on official company letterhead. There is no standard government-issued salary certificate for every private-sector employee. The practical format depends on who requests it.

Your salary should, of course, match your underlying employment and payroll records. Private-sector employers covered by the Wage Protection System must pay wages through approved channels under UAE rules.

What Is a Salary Certificate Used For in the UAE?

  1. Personal Loans and Mortgages

Bank financing is probably the most common reason employees request a salary certificate. Banks use it as one piece of evidence when checking whether your declared income matches your employment and banking records.

For example, Emirates NBD lists a latest salary certificate or salary transfer letter among the documents required for certain personal loans.

  2. Opening Certain Bank Accounts

A salary certificate can also serve as proof of income when opening or updating a bank account.

HSBC, for example, lists a salary certificate or recent bank statement as possible proof of income for UAE residents opening a salary account.

  3. Renting a Property

A landlord or property management company may ask for your salary certificate before accepting a tenancy application.

This is usually an affordability check rather than a formal Ejari requirement. Dubai Land Department's published Ejari information does not make a salary certificate a universal Ejari document. Property owners and agents can still request proof of income before agreeing to rent the property.

  4. Family and Residence Visa Applications

Salary or employment evidence can form part of some immigration applications, but do not assume that every applicant needs the same certificate.

GDRFA Dubai's family residence entry service, for example, lists an employment contract and separately refers to a salary certificate for employees of governmental, semi-governmental institutions and free zones.

For the broader sponsorship process, see Nexture's guide to dependent visa rules in the UAE and its UAE immigration guide.

  5. Overseas and Embassy Applications

An embassy, overseas bank or foreign authority may ask for evidence of your employment and salary.

Some applications also require document attestation. The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides an official document attestation service and lists "to whom it may concern" letters among the types of personal documents that may be attested.

Salary Certificate Format UAE: What Should It Include?

While there is no universal private-sector template, a clear certificate usually contains the following:

    Section

    Information to Include

    Employer

Company name, address and contact details

    Issue details

Certificate date and reference number if used

    Employee

Full name and employee ID if applicable

    Employment

Job title, department and joining date

    Salary

    Basic salary and fixed allowances

    Total compensation

    Gross monthly salary

    Recipient

Specific bank/authority or "To Whom It May Concern"

    Authentication

Authorised person's name, title and signature

    Company verification

    Official company stamp where applicable

Passport or Emirates ID details can also be added when the receiving organisation asks for them.

Keep the salary figures clear. For example:

    Basic Salary: AED 8,000
    Housing Allowance: AED 3,000
    Transport Allowance: AED 1,000
    Total Monthly Salary: AED 12,000

That is easier to verify than simply writing "salary: AED 12,000."

How Can Employees Get a Salary Certificate in the UAE?

The process is usually handled internally by your employer.

  1. Ask the Recipient What It Needs

Do this before emailing HR. Ask whether the certificate must:

    • Be addressed to a particular organisation

    • Include your basic and gross salary separately

    • State allowances

    • Include passport or Emirates ID details

    • Follow a supplied template

    • Be issued within a specific period

    • Carry a company stamp

    • Be attested

This simple check can prevent you from requesting the document twice.

  2. Contact HR or Payroll

Send your HR, payroll or administration team a clear request.

    Provide:

    • Purpose of the certificate

    • Recipient's name

    • Required format

    • Deadline

    • Any template supplied by the bank or authority

For example, if ADCB gives you a particular format for a loan application, send that format directly to HR rather than asking for a generic certificate.

  3. Check the Certificate Before Using It

Compare the document against your employment records. Check your name, joining date, designation, basic salary, allowances and total salary.

Even a small mismatch can create questions when a bank compares the certificate with your bank statements or employment records.

  4. Request a Fresh Copy When Necessary

There is no single statutory validity period for every salary certificate in the UAE. The recipient decides how recent the document needs to be.

For lending, 30 days is a useful benchmark because ADCB expressly requires a certificate dated within 30 days for its expatriate personal loan. Other institutions may apply different periods.

Salary Certificate vs Payslip vs Salary Transfer Letter

These documents are often confused.

Document

Main Purpose

Salary certificate

Confirms employment and income

Payslip

Shows salary, allowances and deductions for a particular pay period

Employment contract

Records agreed employment terms

Salary transfer letter

Confirms or undertakes that salary will be transferred to a particular bank

A salary transfer letter matters especially when borrowing money. A lender may want your employer to commit to transferring your salary into an account with that bank. A normal salary certificate does not automatically create that commitment.

It is important to separate common HR practice from an express statutory requirement. Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 specifically requires an employer, at the worker's request and upon expiry of the employment contract, to provide an experience certificate without charge. That certificate includes information such as employment dates, position and last wage.

That provision concerns an experience certificate at the end of employment. It should not be treated as a universal legal template for salary certificates requested during active employment.

Your MOHRE employment contract, work permit and WPS salary records therefore remain important employment records.

Common Salary Certificate Mistakes

Before submitting your document, watch for a few simple problems:

  • Asking HR for a generic letter when the bank has its own format

  • Using an old certificate

  • Showing only total salary when the recipient requires a breakdown

  • Having salary figures that do not match employment or banking records

  • Misspelling the employee's legal name

  • Leaving out the joining date

  • Forgetting an authorised signature

  • Getting a document attested when attestation was never requested

The safest approach is simple: get the recipient's checklist first and then ask HR to prepare the certificate around it.

Conclusion

A salary certificate in the UAE is usually a short document, but its purpose determines how it should be prepared.

Your employer normally issues it on company letterhead with your employment details and salary breakdown. Banks may require a fresh, addressed certificate. Landlords may use it as proof of affordability. Immigration authorities may instead ask certain private-sector applicants for an employment contract, depending on the service.

So before requesting one, find out exactly what the receiving organisation wants. That small step can save a second trip to HR and avoid delays with your application.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a salary certificate in the UAE?

It is an employer-issued document confirming an employee's job, employment status and salary. Banks, landlords, embassies and other organisations may request it as proof of employment or income.

Is there an official salary certificate format in the UAE?

There is no single universal private-sector format. Employers normally use their own template while following the requirements of the bank, authority or other organisation receiving the document.

How long is a salary certificate valid in the UAE?

There is no universal validity period. The receiving organisation decides how recent it must be. For example, ADCB requires a certificate dated within 30 days for its expatriate personal loan application.

Can I use a salary certificate for a UAE family visa?

Sometimes, but the document requirement depends on your employment category and immigration service. GDRFA Dubai lists salary certificates for certain government, semi-government and free-zone employees, while private-company employees may be asked for an employment contract.

Is a salary certificate the same as a payslip?

No. A salary certificate confirms your employment and overall salary. A payslip records what you earned and what was deducted during a specific salary period.

Is a salary certificate the same as a salary transfer letter?

No. A salary transfer letter normally contains an employer undertaking relating to payment of your salary into a specified bank account. A standard salary certificate mainly confirms your employment and income.

Does a UAE salary certificate need MOFA attestation?

Not for every use. Attestation is generally relevant when the receiving authority specifically requires an authenticated document, particularly for certain overseas or official purposes. Check the requirement before applying through MOFA.
